YouSendIt Suite Targets Business

YouSendIt has formally launched its YouSendIt Corporate Suite for letting multiple users send and receive large files using one corporate account. While the original YouSendIt service is designed for individuals, Corporate Suite is less expensive for groups and offers more management and reporting capabilities.

Specifically, five individual Business Plus YouSendIt accounts cost $150, while the Corporate Suite is a "five-pack" for $99 with more storage and reports for administrators. Companies can also establish a branded "dropbox" to receive multiple files up to 2GB each from clients, colleagues, and friends. The service is designed to outsource or reduce the cost and overhead of maintaining FTP (define) servers for file transfers.

In addition, Corporate Suite offers unlimited bandwidth when sending files and provides automated and centralized user management across organizations, password protection and certified delivery with tracking. The certification includes automatic digital rights management features designed to prevent unauthorized downloads or interception.

YouSendIt lays claim to being the leading digital delivery company for businesses and individuals on the Web with over 5 million registered users in 220 countries. The company said its service transfers over 30,000 GB per day.

"Everything's going digital. Video and other big files helps fuel our business, but users are attracted to the service because it's easy to use and manage," Ranjith Kumaran, founder and vice president of product management at YouSendIt, told InternetNews.com. "With traditional FTP transfers, you drop the file in a directory but you don't know if someone picked it up. We let you know the status and we have plug-ins for Photoshop and other applications."

Kumaran said a beta version of Corporate Suite has been out for six months and was used by over 7,000 companies. He said IT departments "who didn't want the hassle of dealing with FTP transfers" were the biggest group of beta users, followed by department heads, and marketing departments.

Facebook: Let The Devs Have At It

SAN FRANCISCO -- Wireless network operators are finally starting to see the upside of their painful network upgrades and massive investments in data services. But it's time to change or die, according to one of those damned Internet whippersnappers.

Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz took the stage at the CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment show today with stern advice for his elders.

If the wireless telcos don't open their networks to all devices and applications, they're in danger of being replaced by ever-smaller PCs connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

Mobile phones and mobile PCS are certainly converging. The latest generation of phones on display at the conference run applications, play music and video, enable multiple ways of communicating and connect to the Web via closed network, Moskovitz said. Micro-PCs now fit in your pocket, doing all that and connecting to the Web via open networks.

"The device that sat on your desk five years ago now fits in your pocket," he said.

He neglected to mention old-fashioned phone calls, something PCs can only facilitate via buggy VoIP apps and headsets. This omission perhaps points out as well as anything the generational disconnect between Gen-i and everyone who won't see 23 again.

But Facebook has moved way beyond the realm of college kids. Today, the majority of the active user base is not college age, and over 35 is the fastest-growing segment.

Indeed, nearly half the audience raised their hands when he asked for a show of Facebook users. The site's photo-sharing application is the largest on the Web, and the company expects 4 million active users of its mobile products this year.

To meet that demand, Facebook is looking at major opportunities in internal and third-party mobile applications. Today, Moskovitz announced a partnership with Research in Motion, one of the granddaddies of mobile applications providers.

RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis demonstrated integration between the BlackBerry service and Facebook. It takes advantage of the BlackBerry push technology to let users quickly send photos or blog posts to their Facebook profiles, while sending back comments and messages.

"We've integrated what's best about both the platforms to create something quite special," Lazaridis told the CTIA audience.

Moskovitz said that in working with the Facebook mobile team and talking to carriers about enabling third-party data applications, "There's a striking resemblance to problems we face in our own platform."

It's arduous and often impossible for wireless application developers to get their apps approved for carrier networks. And it's close to impossible for any company, with the notable exception of something like Disney, to get their apps on deck, which is where they are immediately available to subscribers.

Moskovitz contrasted that with the wired Web, where consumer choice is endless, and developers can quickly send things to market.

For example, when Facebook rolled out a new developer platform in May it came with new applications that more than 65 developer partners created. Some of these apps are driving significant usage.

Google, the goliath of any market it enters, has been pushing for the open access model. It said it would participate in the January 2008 spectrum auction if the FCC would stipulate that consumers could connect any legal devices and run any legal application on the network. The search giant also wants the FCC to license the 700MHZ spectrum that's up for grabs for wholesale access and allow third parties, such as ISPs, to interconnect at any technically feasible point on the network.

Moskovitz warned that in 2008, Google and Apple will force the open-access issue. Apple will release a developers' toolkit for the iPhone, while Google %26#133; Moskovitz paused dramatically before concluding, "It's going to be big, and my bet is, it's going to be open."

Moskovitz's solution -- for operators to be satisfied with being intelligent pipes -- is a strategy operators have resisted since the dawn of the wireless Internet. But the time is now, he told the audience.

"There are thousands of developers who will create applications for the first platform that will let them."

How to Fight The Onslaught of Security Threats

NEW YORK -- With a constantly evolving threat landscape attacking IT infrastructures, the impulse for many enterprises is just to throw more technology at the problem.

According to Forrester Research Analyst Paul Stamp, that may not necessarily be the right approach.

Speaking on a panel at the Interop conference, Stamp said IT needs to address risks from the top down, first identifying the top five scenarios of how someone could "mess you up." Only after that can IT security techniques be employed.

There is a lot of noise in the security space about new technologies, he said, and we're in a period of digestion where enterprises are trying to make sense of what's out there already.

Enterprises are headed toward more mobility and collaboration technologies, he continued, and they will deploy them first before considering how to secure them. They'll also take a look at virtuatlization first.

Shane Coursen, a virus researcher at Kaspersky Labs, told the audience that he noticed a lot of malware doesn't work well on VMware, if at all.

"I don't know if VMware malware will take off," Coursen said. "We need to look at it from the point of view of the advantages of virtualization, and figure out how the bad guys will twist advantages to their advantage."

Stamp said there's an even bigger issue to deal with in terms of virtualization security. Simply focusing on the vulnerabilities associated with the underlying platform on which a virtual machine exists isn't the whole problem. Enterprises have to manage the way a virtual machine gets configured and reconfigured over time.

Speaking of dealing with security in a holistic way, an emerging trend in IT security has been all-in-one security tools that combine anti-spam, antivirus and system health capabilities, for example. It's a trend that, according to the Interop security panel, isn't necessarily in the best interest of users.

"When you rely on one application to cover every type of security issue, it's generally not a good idea," Coursen said. "If one vulnerability is discovered in the product, you're in trouble. I'm a big proponent of multiple tools from multiple vendors."

Relying solely on one type of approach, whether it's signature files or whitelist approach, isn't the right idea, either. Gary Leibowitz, general manger of Panda Security, said that the signature-based approach doesn't work because it can't keep up with emerging threats. That said, signature files have their place.

"It's like thieves in the city; if you have a list, then why not use it," Leibowitz said. "It's a good approach, but what we're afraid of is the quantities and tactics means we need better mechanisms to identify threats and rapidly deploy updates."

The whitelist approach means that nothing will run unless it's explicitly allowed. Leibowitz argued that whitelists are a business disabler.

For Forrester Research Analyst Stamp, a discussion on the technology tools needed to protect IT is not the level that needs the enterprise's attention.

"I've seen people spend money on tools and yet do not have a configuration management function in place," Stamp said. "The change is in the way we use information, we need to put in place tools to protect information as it moves in ways it hasn't before."

Unfortunately, he doesn't expect any dramatic change in the threat landscape moving forward.

"We're talking about staying one step ahead of the bad guy here when, in reality, we're actually one step behind the business. In order for us to start attacking data security more closely, we have to get better visibility into what the business does with data."

Microsoft's 'Viridian' Gets Open Spec Promise

To encourage developers to write tools that work with its coming virtualization hypervisor, Microsoft Wednesday announced that it is making the applications programming interfaces (API) for its upcoming Windows Server virtualization hypervisor a part of its Open Specifications Promise, or OSP, initiative.

The company quietly released the news via a post on its Windows Virtualization Team Blog.

Analysts said the company is so far behind the competition that it couldn't afford not to make the technology open.

A hypervisor is a small, specialized operating system that sits on the server hardware and lets the server run more than one operating system above it. Microsoft already offers two virtualization products %26#150; Virtual PC and Virtual Server. But both require Windows to be running at the bottommost layer.

Other vendors, primarily VMware, have already offered hypervisor-based virtualization for several years. Microsoft has said that it will release its own hypervisor technology that ultimately will be part of Windows Server 2008. However, that technology will not initially come with Windows Server 2008 when it ships in the first quarter of next year.

Instead, Windows Server virtualization, or WSV, is due out within 180 days of the shipment of Windows Server 2008. It's also referred to by its codename, Viridian.

While Microsoft is bound to be a player in the server virtualization arena due to its massive dominance in the server market %26#150; when it does ship its hypervisor, the company will still lag behind VMware. Additionally, in August, Citrix Systems bought out open source hypervisor vendor, XenSource, which is popular on Linux servers.

Given that interoperability among hypervisors is something customers need, adding the APIs under the OSP license is good news for everyone, according to Citrix, which is now both a Microsoft partner and competitor.

"This will allow us to ensure that virtual machines created on XenServer will be compatible with Microsoft WSV when it is delivered as a component of Windows Server 2008," said a statement attributed to Simon Crosby, CTO of the Virtualization %26 Management Division at Citrix, as part of the Windows Virtualization Team Blog posting.

Much of Microsoft's pitch regarding virtualization has been to developers %26#150; particularly those working on systems management tools to enable administration of virtual machines (VM) and the hypervisor that controls them.

Microsoft's OSP basically promises that developers can use protocols, APIs and other technologies that are placed under that aegis, freely and without fear of lawsuits %26#150; as long as they don't sue Microsoft.

The so-called "hypercall APIs" %26#150; which enable third-party developers to write applications and tools that work with WSV -- will be available when Windows Server 2008 is released to manufacturing, probably later this year. However, developers and other partners have had access to the specifications since 2006.

Given its late entry, several analysts say, Microsoft has to do everything it can to be thought of as a team player. IT shops have heterogeneous environments already and that's not going to change any time soon. So everything has to work together, one way or another.

"Microsoft is really behind other %26#91;competitors%26#93; in the virtualization sphere, so in many ways they don't really have any choice, because a lot of %26#91;IT%26#93; organizations are already using virtualization from other companies," Michael Cherry, lead analyst for operating systems at researcher Directions on Microsoft, told InternetNews.com. "Those organizations are going to want a high-level of interoperability among devices," he added.

Cherry pointed out that a year ago Microsoft also put its Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) formats under the OSP licensing initiative.

Other analysts agree its crucial for Microsoft to gain developers' trust in this area.

"In Microsoft's case, where a lot of people are deeply suspicious of the company's motives, they needed to do this," Gordon Haff, principal IT advisor with analyst firm Illuminata, told InternetNews.com. "Given that they don't have their own virtualization software out there yet, this is the kind of thing they need to do to remain part of the conversation."

Indeed, some observers take it as conventional wisdom that Microsoft's sheer dominance over the Intel server market means WSV is destined to become the standard. Microsoft argues that should be the case since they are the largest operating system vendor.

However, this may turn out to be a case where Microsoft's dominance doesn't prevail.

"Being it's Microsoft, Windows Server's strong market position is going to be seeding the market %26#91;for WSV%26#93; but VMware is the gorilla in this particular market," Dwight Davis, vice president at researcher Ovum Summit, told InternetNews.com. "I don't think %26#91;WSV%26#93; is a slam dunk as the dominant hypervisor," he said.
